It may surprise you to learn that Brazil is actually the world’s largest exporter of cow meat. The total export value sky rocketed from $1.9 million to $1.9 billion between 1996 – 2004.

As a result, beef production is ravaging the Amazon rainforest. Cattle ranching can be attributed to an estimated 70% of the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest in the last several decades.

Amazon Deforestation Brazil 2000-2005

As a result, approximately 91 million kilograms, or 200 million pounds, of beef is imported by the US from Central America every year alone. Europe and North America were previously the biggest importers of Brazilian beef, however now countries such as China and Russia consume more than the European market.

As our population continues to grow, so does the demand for the number of animals grown and killed for food.

The word unsustainable continues to represent a vast number of growing opinions, including that of the United Nations, who are urging the world to shift to a vegan lifestyle.

Meat Atlas 2014 Subsidies Animal ProductsTo support the expansion of the beef industry, the Brazilian government offers loans of billions of dollars. These government agricultural subsidies are provided yearly to farmers and agribusinesses across the world and are absolutely ginormous in price. These subsidies supplement the agribusinesses income so they can afford to manage the supply of animal commodities (including their unnatural feed of corn, oats, soy, wheat), and influence the cost and supply of such commodities.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization finds that beef production gives rise to more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry.

So, while some companies are taking steps to only buying certified cattle where producers maintain their forest reserves, and the Brazilian government hands out $300 million in fines in 2013 to illegally raised cattle, the impact reduction to the Amazon rainforest and our environment is not enough to make any substantial difference to the amount of deforestation occurring due to cattle ranching.

Look at this. Just look at it. Meaty, right?

Well, you already know by the title that this is a vegan meal, but pretty convincing, eh? Even the most fond meat eater would be impressed by the look, texture and taste. The Jack Fruit is able to achieve the look of meat as it is fibrous and stringy, however upon chewing, it is more like an artichoke! There’s less resistance when biting down.

The recipe is at the bottom after the photos!

BBQ Pulled Pork - Jack Fruit photo 6

Jack Fruit fresh out of the can. As you can see, very fibrous!

Alright, we’re off cooking now!

BBQ Pulled Pork - Jack Fruit photo 7

Vegan BBQ Pulled Pork

  • 2 tins of Jack Fruit pieces in water (do not use tins with syrup)
  • 1 tbps Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 tbps Soy Sauce
  • 2 tbps Molasses
  • 1 tsp of Brown Sugar
  • 1 tbps Liquid Smoke, or regular BBQ sauce if you don’ t have any (we used BBQ as we prefer a sweeter flavour)
  • 2 large Brown Onions
  • 1 tbps crushed Garlic
  • 1 tsp Mustard Powder
  • 1 tsp Thyme
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin
  • 1 tsp Chilli Flakes
  • 1 tsp Olive Oil

Simple Beans

  • 1 tin of Mixed Beans
  • 1 tin of Butter Beans (you can use whatever beans you wish, even chickpeas, etc)
  • 1/2 tbps Olive Oil
  • 2 tbps crushed Garlic
  • 1/2 Green Capsicum

Steps for Vegan BBQ Pulled Pork

  • Drain and rinse the Jack Fruit, cut triangles in half.  You’ll notice that the jackfruit has a weird fleshy texture held together by a core/heart. By cutting down these larger pieces means you’ll get tastier food!
  • Dice up your onions in smallish bits.
  • In a frying pan, add oil, garlic, onion, Jack Fruit and sauté for about 10 minutes. You want the onion to get soft and the jack fruit to heat up.
  • Add all of the herbs and liquids, except the liquid smoke/BBQ sauce, into the frying pan. Cook for roughly 5 minutes. Note: If it’s beginning to look a little dry, add in a little bit of water as you want it be moist. Once you’ve sautéed the ingredients, the Jack Fruit should be darker in colour as it’s absorbing the herbs and liquids. The mix should be a bit sticky, not too watery.
  • Crank your oven to about 200C and pour the Jack Fruit mix out onto a baking tray. You need to spread it around evenly, the purpose is to crisp it up / caramelise the mix, just like with pulled pork.
  • Once you have spread the mix on a tray, grab your Liquid Smoke/BBQ Sauce and drizzle it all over your Jack Fruit before putting the tray in the over.
  • Leave in the oven for about 10 minutes, then turn the whole mixture before putting it back in the oven for another 10 mins.
  • Remove and serve with beans!

Steps for Simple Beans

While your Jack Fruit is getting sticky in the oven you can make these really easy beans.

  • Drain and rinse your chosen bean mix.
  • In a pan, slowly heat up the oil and garlic.
  • Once it’s hot, add your beans and the capsicum and heat through.
  • Season with salt and pepper or if you’re awesome, some jalepenos.
  • Serve with your delicious vegan BBQ dish.

Massel Cooking Stocks VeganEven before I entered the delightful world of veganism, I had always used Massel stock cubes for cooking. I was really happy to learn that when going vegan, I didn’t have to change what cooking stocks I purchased (hey now, enjoy the small things, right?).

All of their products are 100% vegan. I’m also a big fan of their company ethics - they are part of the GreenPalm sustainability scheme, take pride in sustainable recycled packaging, as well as understand that vegetable based products are ultimately better for us. If more companies presented themselves as real people, instead of profit-driven jerks, our health, environment and fellow animals would exist in a much better world.

Along with that, Massel also does not add MSG, or vast quantities of salt. There’s no artificial flavours or preservatives, and they use GMO-free ingredients.

Winner!

I shot them an email to say thanks for being awesome, and this was their reply:

Thank you so much for your lovely note. It makes us happy knowing that our efforts are noted!
I will pass your email around the office and ‘spread the love’.
Have you tried our new concentrates? Not only are they vegan but they’re super versatile too.
Let us know your mailing address and we’d be delighted to send you out a sample.

Winner x2!

Dairy Milk

The dairy milk industry began generating a lot of marketing from around the time of WW1. The world was educated that the only effective way to obtain calcium was from cow’s milk, and every generation since has been fed the same lies.

However! There is some interesting news.

There has been a reported 40% increase across the last 3 years for non-dairy milk alternatives in the UK! Along with the sales of non-dairy beverages such as almond, soy, and rice milk hitting $1.33 billion in 2011 in the US. In Australia, Freedom Foods brand marked a trending 24% sales growth in 2012 of its soy, rice and almond milks.

Food For Thought

Milk Calcium Calstrong Supplement

  • Humans are the only species who continue to drink breast milk after we’re weaned off our own mother’s milk. Not only that, but we then drink another species’ milk that’s pumped full of calcium supplements.
  • Yes, supplements. In order to supply the ginormous qualities of milk that the world’s population gulps down, mass production dairy cow’s are forced to spend their entire lives in feedlots and sheds. There isn’t really any amount of grass available considering factory farms do not perform any environmentally sustainable soil fertilising. Thus, cows require calcium supplements in their unnatural feed of corn, soy, wheat and grains.
  • Dairy cows endure annual cycles of forced artificial insemination (rape), pregnancy and birth. The mechanised milking lasts for 10 out of 12 months. This excessive metabolic drain overburdens the cows and leads to epidemics of imposed diseases, such as lameness and mastitis (udder infections). These are the two leading causes of dairy cow mortality in the US alone.
  • Antibiotics are frequently used to combat mastitis, along with growth hormones to produce bigger yields of milk.
  • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Primary Industry (DPI) Australia, in regards to the import/export of dairy. The FDA allows 750 million pus cells in every litre of milk. It is all cooked (pasteurised) at high temperatures, but they don’t remove the pus and blood, nor does it negate the effect of the toxins produced.
  • Calcium is obtained naturally via broccoli, almonds, chia seeds, orange juice, and certain leafy greens.

Cow Over Milked

So, Why The Dairy Milk Push?

Because money!

The Got Milk? ad campaign was the US dairy industry’s trump card, generating over 90% brand awareness. Advertisement was aimed to convince cash-strapped consumers that milk was a cheap, nutritious option for them and their families.

The rise in popularity of plant-based milks can be attributed to the fact that awareness of plant-based milk health benefits has grown.

report states that the health issues, including lactose intolerance, milk allergy, and the genetic disorder phenylketonuria (PKU), can be addressed through the consumption of dairy alternative beverages because these plant-based milks are free of animal proteins, in particular casein.

The latest US panic rebranding exercise, Milk Life, may have been triggered by the fact that, in spite of all the clever gimmicks and ad slogans, consumption of cow’s milk is continuing to decline.

Do you think the dairy industry is a tad nervous?

Against animal testing australiaCould Australia be the next cruelty free zone? A landmark proposal by the Greens could mean an end to all cosmetics testing on animals in Australia.

There are laws currently against testing cosmetics and toiletries on animals in Australia, yet sadly many big-name brands such as Procter & Gamble (P&G), Colgate-Palmolive and L’Oreal still fund painful and often lethal tests on animals in other countries before sending their products here.

On Monday, Senator Lee Rhiannon will introduce a private member’s bill to ban all animal-tested cosmetics in Australia, including those imported from countries that test on animals.

Please support Animals Australia and this ban by signing the petition!

In June, the Humane Research Australia commissioned research showing that 81% of Australians supported a total ban on the sale of cosmetics tested on animals. Animal testing is considered medically outdated, sadistic and cruel. There’s 33 reasons as to why animal testing is completely unnecessary.

Animals Australia have provided a helpful list on which companies STILL test on animals, who are to be avoided!

Cat enclosures are becoming wildly popular as people recognise how unsafe cats are roaming around.

Why Are Cats Unsafe?

When you consider the dangers that exist outside, you might wonder why we allow cats to roam around doing whatever they please, while dogs are required to be kept securely behind fencing. Consider the laws that exist – they’re set up to ensure human safety, not animal. Most dogs can potentially be a threat to humans, while cats are typically not. This is the only reason we have the laws that we do, it has nothing to do with the safety of our animals.

Cats have to deal with a range of threats – humans, roads and cars, native animals, local councils and pounds, getting injured, becoming lost. Why subject your beloved kitty to all of that and stress yourself out?

How?

With the flexibility of setting up an enclosure anywhere in your backyard with the ability to link to an easily accessible window of your house, there’s no reason to risk your cat roaming anywhere and everywhere outside. Enclosures can be decked out with incredible climbing infrastructure and sleeping pods! Anything from large tree branches, to various wall shelves for cats to jump around on, to outdoor cat stands.

Cat enclosures backyard safe

Enclosures can be set up in all kinds of ways – full backyard enclosures, side enclosures that join to the side of your house, to enclosures involving patios and verandas. The companies who install these enclosures are essentially customising every time, so there’ll always be a perfect fit.

I’ve even set one up for my two kitties while in a rental property – fully approved! The secured fittings leave barely any trace that can’t be puttied up and painted with a dob of paint.

  • Happy Cat Enclosures - QLD based, but they build up order and travel around Australia doing installations!
  • CatMax – Agents throughout Australia.

Walking Cats

Yup, you heard me. Walking your cat like you walk a dog on a lead. It isn’t as bizarre as you may initially think and is becoming more and more common. Cats need exercise and like to explore, so why not join them for 30 minutes a day?

As originally mentioned, people are becoming very aware of just how dangerous our world is for our beloved furbabies. The world we’ve created isn’t overly safe for them, and that isn’t fair. If you can implement a safe enclosed area and spend a small amount of time each day giving them a walk, in exchange for a happy, stimulated, safe cat, why wouldn’t you?

Amazing Facts About Chickens

FACT 1: Just like us, or the family dog or cat, hens are individuals with unique personalities! A hen might be outgoing and sociable, or shy and reserved, depending on her character.

FACT 2: Hens can recognise the faces of at least 100 other chickens, helping them to navigate their complex social hierarchy.

FACT 3: Naturally curious and intelligent animals, hens love to explore and investigate the world around them through their keen senses. They even see colour better than humans!

FACT 4: Hens have the ability to understand that an object, when taken away and hidden, continues to exist. This is a cognitive capacity beyond that of small children.

FACT 5: It may all sound like “cluck cluck cluck” to us, but hens use at least 24 different calls and they all vary depending on what information they are communicating.

FACT 6: If there is a threat approaching, a hen can vary her call depending on whether the predator is travelling by land or over water.

FACT 7: A hen will cluck softly to her unborn chicks, to start teaching them how to communicate before they even hatch. And her chicks chirp back from inside their shells!
